Background Information When European explorers arrived in the Americas, it changed the world forever. People all over the world were impacted, including native peoples in the Americas, Africans, and the Europeans. For example, soon after Columbus's voyages, corn, an important crop for Native Americans, reached Spain and the rest of Europe. Its cultivation quickly became widespread. Today, corn is a staple of many diets around the world. What other impacts did European exploration have on the world? Why was European exploration of the Americas a turning point in history?

Think about the changes related to the European exploration and colonization of the Americas. Then read the Compelling Question for this lesson.
