Population Within the Northwest Territory, 1800–1850 This chart shows how the population changed from 1800 to 1850 in the present-day states that made up the Northwest Territory. Ohio was the first of these areas to join the union in 1803. Wisconsin was the last, in 1848. The Ohio River formed the border of three of those states: Ohio, Indiana, and Illinois. Over time, more and more settlers moved into the territory due to the availability of land, the rich natural resources, and the access provided by the Ohio River, the Great Lakes, and other waterways. EVALUATE SOURCES AND USE EVIDENCE Refer back to the Compelling Question and the Supporting Questions you developed at the beginning of the lesson. 1. Evaluating What is an example of a positive effect of territorial expansion these sources show? 2. Explaining What do these sources reveal about the growth and development of the United States beyond the original 13 states? 3. Gathering Sources Which sources helped you answer the Supporting Questions and the Compelling Question? Which sources, if any, challenged what you thought you knew when you first created your Supporting Questions? What information do you still need in order to answer your questions? What other viewpoints would you like to investigate? Where would you find that information? 4. Evaluating Sources Identify the sources that helped answer your Supporting Questions. How reliable is each source? How would you verify the reliability of each source? Complete Your Inquiry

COMMUNICATE CONCLUSIONS 5. Collaborating Work with a partner to discuss the effects of territorial expansion. How do these sources demonstrate the importance of this period in American history? Use the graphic organizer that you created at the beginning of the lesson to help you. Share your conclusions with the class. TAKE INFORMED ACTION Writing a Letter The legislation of the 1780s helped plan for the growth and settlement of new areas of the United States. Today, most cities, states, and regions have planning and development departments that plan for change and growth within their borders. Research a local department, along with its plans and rules for the area’s growth, or any issues related to the department and its work. Write a letter to the department voicing your opinion on its work and future plans.
