Background Information During the Civil War, people documented what life was like in the North and the South. Northerners and Southerners experienced fear, anger, and frustration with their governments and about the war itself. They wrote letters, kept diaries, and created posters that expressed their feelings and their beliefs in the Northern or the Southern cause. The primary sources in this lesson reflect various perspectives, including those of civilians, women, and African Americans.
