A Understanding Multiple Perspectives

Even before President Abraham Lincoln was assassinated, Radical Republicans had already developed their own approach to

statistics about the industries you found, as well as visuals with text boxes that explain them. Get feedback from a classmate and make changes as needed. Finalize your poster and present it. The person could be a moderate Republican, a Southern Democrat, or Presidents Abraham Lincoln or Andrew Johnson. The Library of Congress website is a good place to start. Write a dialogue between Stevens and the person you researched. The dialogue should explore their differing perspectives on Reconstruction and include quotes from each. Present your dialogue to the class.

Radicals sought to punish those who had seceded from the Union. The Radicals’ point of view is captured in a quote from Representative Thaddeus Stevens. “ We hold it to be the duty of the government to inflict . . . punishment on the rebel belligerents, and so weaken their hands that they can never again

Economic Reasoning B Before the Civil War, the backbone of the Southern economy was agriculture. It remained so throughout the 1800s, although industry made dramatic gains. Certain states became associated with certain industries, such as tobacco in North Carolina and lumber in Florida. ACTIVITY Creating a Poster About the New South Study the chart showing manufacturing in the South from 1860 to 1900. Choose one state and research its economy during the Civil War and then during Reconstruction. Investigate the state’s industries—what they were, where they were located, and how they changed—as well as its rural economy. As part of your research, investigate the ways citizens of the state were impacted by economic changes and the similarities among them. Then design a colorful poster that summarizes your findings. The poster should include the important
