with water, can also be found east of the mountains. The Florida Everglades are the largest wetlands system in North America. The subregion has a wide variety of animal life. The Atlantic Ocean and the numerous rivers offer many forms of fish and shellfish. Large animals, such as deer, bear, and even alligators, inhabit the region. The woodlands region in the Northeast is cooler, and the coastal plain here is narrower.

Instead of long, easy-to-navigate rivers, the Northeast is home to many lakes and ponds. Much of the Northeast was heavily forested. While the coastal regions are rocky and less suitable for farming, the Piedmont region is fertile. As in the Southeast, coasts, lakes, and rivers provide plentiful forms of seafood. Deer, bear, and other mammals also serve as food sources. The Northeast has harsher winters and a shorter growing season than the Southeast.
