One function of government is to interact with the governments of other countries. Here, President Barack Obama, right, greets other leaders at a 2016 meeting on the environment.

Being a Globally Competent Citizen Today the world faces many problems that go beyond the borders of any one country. When people travel, disease can spread quickly. Because economies are connected, economic problems in one country can affect other countries. In addition, more world leaders believe that all people should have certain basic human rights. World leaders often work together to address these issues. Being a globally competent citizen means thinking about how you can make the world a better place. Staying informed and respecting the views of others helps all Americans. Through that same effort, you can help the rest of the world. 7 CHECK FOR UNDERSTANDING 1. Roles, Duties, and Responsibilities of Citizenship In the United States, citizens also have various roles and carry out some duties. Obeying all federal, state, and local laws is a duty of citizenship. Citizens have a duty to pay taxes, which pay for the services they receive from the government. Citizens also have responsibilities. We should stay informed about important issues, or topics, so we can make wise choices when we vote. Voting is a way to have a voice in our own government. Citizens also should respect the rights and views of other people. Finally, citizens should be involved in their local community. By working with one another, we help make our neighborhoods and towns better places to live. Strong communities have fair laws to protect public safety, such as speed-limit, texting while driving, and anti- bullying laws. They also protect public health by having policies that promote immunizations and healthcare. To keep our communities strong, we can volunteer our time, join neighborhood groups, and serve in public office.
