Understanding Chronology
One of the most useful tools for historians and students of history is the time line. A time line allows analysis of events over time. It can show cause-and-effect relationships or can help you compare what was happening at the same time in different places. ACTIVITY Creating a Time Line Conduct research to identify at least 10 events that occurred in the United States in either the 1700s or the 1800s. Then create a time line and arrange your events accurately and appropriately on it. Give your time line a title and write a brief summary of each event. Include illustrations for some of the major time line events.

Geographic Reasoning
Learning how to read a map is an important skill. Maps have special features and symbols that make them very useful tools for a historian.
ACTIVITY Identifying Parts of a Map Study the map. Then identify what type of map this is and explain why you think so. Then name the map feature indicated by each boxed letter and explain the significance of that map feature.
