United States History Student Edition
Building Citizenship E Being a globally competent citizen means learning about different issues that affect your home, nation, and the world. It means taking care of the environment. Once we learn how citizens collect and use natural resources, we can work together more easily to solve some big problems. ACTIVITY Researching Renewable and Non-renewable Resources. On the Internet or in the library, conduct research to find out about individuals or organizations that are working on solutions for a national or local problem surrounding various resources in the United States or Florida. Examples of non- renewable resources might include oil, gas, coal, or minerals. Examples of renewable resources might include solar, wind, hydropower, geothermal, or biomass. Choose one resource to study, and use your research to write a report on the challenges that surround your resource and any possible solutions. Answer questions such as: Where is your resource usually found in Florida or the United States? How it is extracted or collected? What organizations or people are affiliated with your resource, and how are they involved? What is a challenge that is associated with your resource, and how have people tried to solve that challenge? What disagreements do people have about the use of your resource? Share your findings as a written report or oral presentation to the class.
Historians and students of history must be able to analyze an event to determine what led to it, or its causes, and what the results, or effects, were. ACTIVITY Creating a Cause-and-Effect Diagram of a Recent Event Choose a recent event that has occurred locally, nationally, or internationally. Research the event and find several sources about it. Then use the sources to create a diagram that shows at least three causes and three effects of this event. Write a paragraph explaining which source or sources you relied on for your presentation and why you chose those accounts as reliable. F Making Connections to Today
